If you have a pup out of generations of good line bred dogs, let's use Finley River Chief as an example, What if Sire and Dam have never been trained. Will the pups still continue to be good coon hounds? Or will eventually they just amount to little or nothing? I'm using old Chief just  for an example. In other words do hounds have to be hunted to keep their traits going? Forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Does It Matter Empty Hunting and genes

Post  Virginia Owen Thu Oct 03, 2013 1:46 am

The genes of a coonhound are what they are whether the dog is hunted or not.  Hunting the dog only shows whether the right genes for hunting are present to be passed to the dog's offspring.  The dog's offspring will get the same genes whether the dog is hunted or not.  In other words hunting does not change genes, but hunting will show whether the good genes for hunting abilities are present in the dog.  Pedigree breeding without hunting may not get the traits you want in your pups, because the unhunted parent may not have those genes.  However, an unhunted dog with superb ancestors may very well have fine pups.  HUNTING THE DOG DOES NOT CHANGE ITS GENES.  Hope this helps.   Virginia Owen

Thanks so much for your reply. This was what I thought, but some would disagree. I think coon dogs are bred not made, but you have to give them the chance and oppurtunity to do the job. I know from experience it takes a lot of patience and work to get a hound started in the right direction, especially in a sparse population of coon.
